Retratos: ¿Parecerse... o Ser?

Portraits: To Look Like... or To Be?

Portraying is one of the main challenges faced by the painting artists of any time. In particular, when the one to be portrayed is somebody close to us, tense situations and even quarrels might arise from conflicts between our artistic ego and the model’s ego:

- That thing is not me! - Our model insists.
- That is how I see you! - We argue firmly.

If our work finally succeeds, our model will gaze at it with a wide smile while exclaiming:

- Now it is really me!

It is not easy either defining or describing the qualities a portrait must acquire to cross the boundary between a condescending assessment (mmm, yes, it is similar) and a convinced one (oh, this is really her/him). When this happens, we will know that the artist has been able to capture the essence of the personal mask constituting any face: The mask reflecting each one’s history, the mask through which we present ourselves, the mask by which we try to decipher other people´s interior.

Here you are my attempt of this month. I hope I got it. While glancing at it, you can listen to these "Folías de España" performed by Trío Yepes (The great Narciso Yepes, his daughter Ana, and his son Ignacio).
