Pilgrims in human endeavour (II): Santiago Ramón y Cajal

Spain has not exhibited a wide support to scientific activity along history, thus its scientists achivements are barely known and their names are hardly ever remembered. On this scenery the lonely, courageous figure of Santiago Ramón y Cajal appears as a true colossus, whose genial intelligence cannot be separated from an unwavering will-power.

Every man is able to be the sculptor of his own brain, if he sets out so.

You have been given something more precious than any sensorial excellence: a privileged brain, the sovereign organ of knowledge and adaptation which, sagely used, will improve to infinity the analytical power of your senses. Thanks to it, you will be able to dive into the ignored and operate on the invisible, clarifying the arcane of matter and energy as much as possible. And your inquisitive potentials are far of having been exhausted. Very otherwise, they will grow incessantly such that each evolutionary stage of the Homo sapiens will have the characteristics of a new humanity.

In these two sentences (the second of them having been written during his very last days) Ramon y Cajal summarises the main clues of his life, both personal and scientific, and anticipates in some manner what is currently known as neuroplasticity, by joining conjectures taken from his discoveries with stressing the will-power in the self-building of a person. This same will-power guided the creative and imaginative child he was, as he described himself, to discovering the neuron and developing a description of the way the nervous system works, fully ascertained by the most powerful modern observation instruments.

He authored hundreds of scientific works together with many interesting humanistic essays. In addition, he invented (but neither patented nor commercialised) a method of colour photography, as a collateral result of the chemical studies required for his microscopy preparations.

When drafting his features, especially the ones of his deep gaze, I have felt the energy, the genius and the will-power of this great man and great Spanish scientist.

Getting ready for Christmas.

I can hardly believe that Christmas is just around the corner. One month and there we are! And this is even more unbelievable with the mild weather we're having here these days ... However, little by little, trees in the parks are already dressed up in yellow, warm spicy teas have have left behind lemonade and wool is back to our lives.

Streets will get colourful lighting and stationary shop shelves will get packed with nice Christmas stuff without us really noticing it.

I have wanted to be a bit ahead of time and thus, here you have a tiny gift. It is a Christmas greeting card with a watercolour drawing of mine that you can download and print on some nice cardboard.

Humedales (81 cm × 73 cm)

Welcome Autumn. Farewell Summer.

Last summer I set myself the goal of painting a landscape

I filled my summer time with greens shifting to blue and also with those shifting to yellow, those keeping flowers company, hanging from bushes and climbing honeysuckles.

Do you know how many shades of green one can find in nature? Just in a normal landscape, huh? Without any pretensions, right! ... Well, a lot! Maybe thousands. And all of them went from my eyes to canvas and then from canvas again to my eyes and now to yours.

I spent hours, days and weeks thinking on that colour and its long tribe of emeralds, turquoises, myrtles and forest greens. Just like in a symphony, they orchestrated and organised themselves little by little, blending and harmonising with its cousins the blue and the violet.

Here is the result.

Aventureros del esfuerzo (I)

Comenzaré evocando a Marie Curie.

Pilgrims in human endeavour (I).

Embezzlers, social climbers and all types of impostors who call themselves successful (summing up, politicians of whatever the wing and sphere), characterise these times. I would like to remind these exploiters and sinister scoundrels that their welfare depends on someone else’s effort. Just a little memo to them: the wealth they squander only comes from true, real toil and trouble.

Without belittling the efforts of thousands of anonymous people, I would like to pay tribute to all those geniuses who have improved human knowledge with their scientific contributions or have grown collective sensibility out of their art: women and men who have set what type of intellectual heights mankind potential can achieve. I will try to strike a pictorial dialog up with them by drawing their faces, attempting to unveil from their features and looks their message of creativity and perseverance.

I will start evoking Marie Curie.

In the pictures we have from her, she looks fragile and so modestly dressed that nearly borders penury. However, her serene and determined look reveals a strong character with a great sense of commitment. Her life – which we know from a biography her daughter Eva wrote – confirms these personality features. A life full of effort and noble devotion to her fellow humans.

prometemos mejorar;
si no, soy un mentiroso.
Buenas noches digo a todos.
Si amigos sois, aplaudid,
y os lo premiará Robín.
(El sueño de una noche de verano. Acto V. Escena I. W. Shakespeare)

Reveries.

When a painting materialises, it may turn out to be very different from what the author originally conceived. I thought and sketched the one I present now as crossing line figures over a vegetal background. However, the figures, when embodied on canvas, acquired an unexpected corporeity. Then, to my astonishment, I noticed their resemblance to those images usually unfolding in my slumbers. Those reveries we softly slip into when surfing the deep waters of sleep, in search of daily rebirth.

PUCK
If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here,
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
If you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have earned luck,
Now to scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long,
Else the Puck a liar call.
So, good night unto you all,
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
and Robin shall restore amends.
(A midsummer night's dream. Act V. Scene I. W. Shakespeare)

Premio Liebster

Antesala (116 cm × 100 cm).

In and out and in again.

Airport and station waiting lounges are on the threshold of a trip and inside the trip. Some people read, some walk around and some others snooze. But all of them wait while dreaming of opening the windows to other worlds, to other realities, to other cities full of beauty. Some of them wander leaving something behind, looking for a change in their lives or another chance: a place for them in the world.

Lugares comunes. Adolfo Aristarain.

Confused and chaotic times.

Confusion and uncertainty cast a shadow over the beginning of the third millenium. These three images show my vision of these times.

I don't know if our story is really worth the telling. There may not even be a story or this may turn into a diary. I know there is disorder, disappointment, disconcertment. There is a country shattering us, a world expelling us, a diffuse murderer killing us daily and we do not realise it. I don't have any answers. I write out of chaos, in deep darkness.

Common Ground. Adolfo Aristarain

Recordé a mi viejo violoncelista ruso ...

The Hermitage collection in El Prado

The Prado museum is a magical place where to shelter oneself from black days until storm is over.
This year’s flagship exhibition is the Hermitage in the Prado. It comprises a wide and interesting variety of works from all periods.
I enjoyed many of them but I really relished Houdon’s bust of Voltaire. Only a few days earlier I attended a talk at Fundación Juan March about this philosopher and I had a good time relating what I learnt about him in this conference with his facial features. I thought I saw a knowing smile painted on his face while he whispered in my ear his favourite phrase: “écrasez l’infâme”.
The Lute Player by Caravaggio impressed me quite a bit but the Portrait of a Scholar by Rembrandt and the works of Velázquez, El Greco and Ribera they had were also amazing. I really loved these paintings and I stood admiring them quite a while.
Apart from the one of Voltaire, they also had some other wonderful sculptures such as a Penitent Magdalene by Antonio Canova and The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa by Bernini.
Moving to the twentieth century: Kandinsky, The Absinthe Drinker by Picasso and one of Monet’s wonderful lakes.
Worth a visit for those who do not have the chance to travel to Russia: it is a unique occasion.

It reminded me of my old Russian cello player ...

Mercados callejeros

Street markets.

Sensations overwhelm my retina: movement, joy, crowds, colour, jiggery-pokery, fast images and music. Each street market has its own iconography and its own sounds. I can mentally see Portobello Road and Paris flea markets all mixed up together with a song from Zaz I’ve listened to recently (La Fee: it is one of my latest musical acquisitions and I love it) and, of course, with La Vie en Rose.

Several times when walking in El Rastro, I feel I hear Alfredo Kraus singing the Merry Song of Youth from the opera Doña Francisquita, some others I mentally hum Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid by Luigi Boccherini. Perhaps, they only exist in my imagination but those music rhythms are the ones guiding my hand when painting those markets. Still and all, my daughter says her ipod plays Sálvese quien pueda by Vetusta Morla on market Sunday mornings when strolling around a packed Ribera de Curtidores…

Entreacto

Entreacto

Necesito pintar.

Entr'acte.

I need painting. I need music. I paint when I listen to music and I listen to music when I paint.

I live in Madrid’s chaos intertwined with its crowds. I live on urban landscapes surrounding me and from them I write colour and shape. However, to let my speech flow, I need finding my own way to colour the tales I observe and here is where Tchaikovski, Vadim Repin and I meet.
